Does Salt Air Damage a Metal Roof?
Salt air damages metal roofs that contain iron. Steel roofing depends on a coating to keep salt away from the iron beneath it, and every cut edge, scratch and fastener hole exposes that iron. Aluminum contains no iron, forms a stable self-protecting oxide, and cannot rust. That distinction governs service life on the Salish Sea.

What actually happens when salt air hits a metal roof?
Salt air is not corrosive in the way most people picture it. Airborne salt aerosol settles on a roof surface and, because sodium chloride draws moisture out of the air, it holds a thin damp film against the metal long after the rain has stopped. That film is an electrolyte, and an electrolyte sitting on iron sets up an electrochemical cell. The iron oxidizes. That reaction is rust. So the question is really about chemistry rather than about how many feet the house sits from the water. A roofing metal that contains iron gives the salt film something to attack. A roofing metal that contains no iron has nothing to give up. Along the Salish Sea shoreline that film is present for much of the year. Bellingham Bay, the channels around Anacortes and the San Juan gateway, the west-facing shores of Whidbey and Camano, the Strait of Juan de Fuca at Sequim, and the Kitsap Peninsula and Hood Canal frontage all sit under a marine layer and wind-driven spray that keep replenishing it.
Why can aluminum not rust?
Rust is iron oxide. Aluminum contains no iron, so it cannot produce iron oxide, and rust is simply not a failure mode available to it. What aluminum does instead is form aluminum oxide, a thin and tightly bonded transparent film that develops the instant bare metal meets air. That oxide film is why aluminum behaves the way it does on a shoreline. It is not sacrificial and it is not applied in a factory. It is the metal reacting with its own environment, and when the surface is scratched the freshly exposed aluminum forms new oxide over the scratch. The protection is a property of the material rather than a layer resting on top of it. The AAMA 2605 70 percent PVDF Alunar coating on the outside is a color and weathering finish warranted for 30 years. It is not what stops corrosion. Remove the paint from an aluminum panel entirely and the metal still will not rust.
Where does steel roofing fail first in salt air?
At the edges. Steel roofing is protected by a metallic coating, zinc on galvanized and an aluminum-zinc alloy on Galvalume, plus paint on top. Both work by keeping the electrolyte away from the steel, and zinc additionally corrodes in preference to the steel so that small exposed areas stay protected. The system is genuinely effective, and away from saltwater it can serve for decades. The difficulty in salt air is that a roof is not a continuous sheet of coated steel. Panels are cut to length on site, cut around valleys, hips, chimneys and skylights, drilled for fasteners and walked on. Every cut leaves a raw steel edge. Every exposed fastener creates a penetration where the coating is broken and a rubber gasket begins aging. Every scratch from a dropped tool or a scraping branch opens a window. Inland those small breaches tend to stabilize, because the zinc sacrifices itself over a short distance and the edge settles. In a chloride-rich environment the reaction runs faster and the sacrificial reserve is consumed sooner, so edge creep and staining around fastener holes appear earlier. That is the mechanism, and it is why the cut edge is where a coastal steel roof is judged.
How far inland does salt air travel in Washington?
Farther than most homeowners expect, and not in a neat band. Salt aerosol is carried by wind, so exposure depends on fetch, prevailing direction and terrain rather than a straight-line distance from the beach. In practice the west-facing bluffs of Whidbey and Camano, the Anacortes waterfront and the San Juan gateway, the Sequim shoreline along the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the Bellingham Bay basin, and the Kitsap and Hood Canal shorelines all carry meaningful salt loading. A house a mile or two back from the water with an unobstructed exposure can see more salt than a sheltered house two blocks from the shore. This matters when you read a warranty. Documents that define coastal exclusions by measured distance from saltwater are describing a simpler world than the Salish Sea actually produces. Corrosion follows exposure, not a line drawn on a map.
What should a shoreline homeowner check before choosing a metal roof?
Four things, in this order. First, what stops corrosion in this product, the base metal or a coating? Second, are the fasteners exposed to the weather or concealed under the panel? Third, what happens at every cut edge, and does the installer have a defined detail for it? Fourth, does the material warranty say anything about proximity to saltwater? Will a metal roof rust near saltwater in Washington?
Aluminum roofing will not rust, because rust is iron oxide and aluminum contains no iron. Steel roofing can rust near saltwater once its zinc or Galvalume coating is breached at a cut edge, a fastener hole or a scratch. The base metal decides the answer, not the paint.
Does the paint finish protect an aluminum roof from salt?

How close to saltwater is too close for a metal roof?
For aluminum there is no proximity threshold, because the corrosion mechanism that concerns coated steel does not apply to a metal without iron. For coated steel, many manufacturers define a saltwater proximity limit inside the warranty. Read that clause first, because it states what the manufacturer expects near a shoreline.
Do exposed fasteners matter more on a coastal roof?
Yes. Every exposed fastener is a hole through the roof covering sealed by a rubber gasket, and salt-laden moisture works on both the gasket and the cut steel around it. Interlock panels use concealed fasteners and interlock on four sides, so no gasket or screw head faces the weather.
