What Is a Class A Fire-Rated Roof, and How Do You Get One?
Class A is the highest fire classification for roof coverings under ASTM E108, and it rates a complete roof assembly rather than a single product. Interlock aluminum is non-combustible, and a Class A rated assembly is available when the panels are installed over GAF VersaShield underlayment per ICC-ES ESR-2053.

What does a Class A fire rating actually mean?
Class A is the top of the three-step fire classification for roof coverings established by ASTM E108, and by UL 790, which is the equivalent test method. A laboratory subjects a complete roof specimen to intermittent flame exposure, spread-of-flame and burning-brand tests, then assigns Class A, B or C based on how the specimen behaves. The classification describes resistance to fire arriving from outside the building - an ember shower, a burning tree, a neighbour's house - not resistance to a fire that starts inside. The load-bearing word is assembly. The tested specimen includes the roof deck, the underlayment or fire barrier, any battens or clips, and the finished covering, installed the way the manufacturer specifies. Change one layer and the tested condition no longer describes what is on your house. That is why a careful answer is never that a product carries the rating by itself; the rating attaches to the tested build-up. For Washington homeowners the distinction is practical rather than academic. If you live in a wildland-urban interface area, a building official, a lender or an insurer may ask what your roof assembly is rated to. What they want is a documented assembly and an evaluation report number they can look up, not an adjective in a brochure.
Why is aluminum non-combustible but not automatically rated?
Aluminum does not burn. The panels we install in Washington are ASTM B209 aluminum in 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 tempers with roughly 95 percent recycled content, finished with an AAMA 2605 70 percent PVDF Alunar coating. As a metal, the covering contributes no fuel and cannot be ignited by an ember landing on it. That is a genuine and useful property, and it is the reason metal is a common recommendation in fire-prone country. What a fire test measures, however, is the behaviour of everything beneath the covering as well. A burning brand resting on a metal panel conducts heat downward, and the question the laboratory asks is whether the layer below - underlayment, sheathing, framing - reaches ignition before the brand burns out. A non-combustible surface over a combustible deck can still fail the burning-brand test. That is exactly why the standard is written around assemblies. So the accurate framing is two sentences, not one: aluminum is non-combustible, and a Class A rated assembly is available for it. Any contractor who tells you a bare metal panel carries the classification on its own is describing ASTM E108 incorrectly, and that is worth noticing before you sign anything else they have written.
How do you get a Class A rated assembly on a Washington home?
The route we use is a fire barrier beneath the panels. A Class A rated assembly is available for the Interlock system when the aluminum is installed over GAF VersaShield underlayment in the configuration described in ICC-ES ESR-2053. VersaShield is a non-asphaltic fire barrier built for this job: it allows a covering to reach the classification over a combustible wood deck, which is what almost every Washington house has. Because the rating attaches to the assembly, the specification has to be written before installation rather than discovered afterwards. Deck type, underlayment product, fastening pattern and slope all belong in the written scope of work. If a Class A rated assembly is what you want, say so at the quote stage so the fire barrier is measured, priced and ordered with the rest of the material rather than added as an afterthought. Which other test standards should a Washington roof meet?
Fire is one exposure among several, and each is answered by a different laboratory test. The same panels are covered by ICC-ES ESR-1790, which reports wind uplift performance to 177.5 psf, and by UL 2218 Class 4, the top impact classification in that standard, determined by dropping a two-inch steel ball on the panel and confirming it does not crack or split. Coating durability sits under a separate specification. The Alunar finish meets AAMA 2605, the higher-tier architectural coating standard, and the coating is warranted for 30 years. Alunar colours are CRRC-rated, so their solar reflectance and thermal emittance values are published rather than estimated - useful if you are comparing how a roof will behave through an eastern Washington summer. The product warranty is separate again from the test standards. The Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty runs for the lifetime of the original owner, is transferable once, and covers the second owner to 50 years from substantial completion. Wind is warranted to 120 mph and hail to 1.5 inches. Ask for those documents by name; a roofer who can produce them is a roofer who has read them.
How do you verify a Class A claim before you sign?
Ask a direct question: which tested assembly are you installing, and what is the evaluation report number? A contractor working to a documented assembly will answer immediately with a report designation such as ICC-ES ESR-2053 for the fire barrier and ICC-ES ESR-1790 for the panel system. Get the answer written into the contract rather than promised on a doorstep. Then check it yourself. ICC-ES evaluation reports are published and searchable, and each one lists the conditions of use - deck types, slopes, underlayments - under which the rating holds. If the assembly on your quote does not match the assembly in the report, the rating does not travel with it. Confirm too that the fire barrier appears as a line on the material list, because a layer nobody ordered is a layer nobody installs. Finally, ask your local building department what applies at your address. Fire requirements for roof coverings vary by jurisdiction and by whether a property is mapped in a wildland-urban interface area, and those maps and rules are revised over time. Your building department and the Washington Department of Natural Resources are the authorities on what currently applies to your parcel; we build to whatever assembly that answer requires.
